Still homeless… but on the move.

We’re still homeless, but the movers come Tuesday.   Here is a little sneak peak of our new Boston digs (These photos were kindly taken by our agent):

Welcome to our home! Like the view?

This was taken from the front hallway- this is our living/dining room.  Here are a couple more shots:

Yeah, we'll be using that fireplace a lot, me thinks.

Those floors won't be shiny for long....

And here is the teeny tiny galley kitchen off the living room:

Orange you glad they are repainting this wall? (sorry, couldn't resist)

(PS- my favorite part about the kitchen? The way they staged it with a colander of dry uncooked pasta with two serving spoons jammed inside. Yummy! Just like mom used to make!)

We’ll take a photo tour of the downstairs tomorrow……

Scenes from a move…

And so it begins...

I think we could have staged our home like this. Gorgeous.

Now where did I put that map?

We keep it real tidy, but I like a little dust on the floor.

Objects may appear larger in photos.

Can't forget to pack the garbage.

And....we are officially homeless until Monday. (the buyers get the poster. but not the kid. can't forget to pack the kid! and the dog.)

I pulled the trigger.

I was looking at another blog and there was an ad for Boden’s 15% off sale. Now mind you, I had just been stalking my “shopping bag” on their site not even two hours earlier.  So I clicked back to check it out and $60 had been taken off my total, plus free shipping!  Well, I think you know what I had to do, right?

"If you stalk it, it will go on sale"- me

MINE!  ALL MINE!  Anyway, go check out the site- 15% off and free shipping.  PS- Boden, I will totally pay for play, know what I’m sayin?

(Buuurrrp) ‘Scuse me.

It seems we have a bunch of friends who are pregnant. I am not about to do the math and figure out what was going on that particular weekend, but as I went through Colin’s room to prepare for our move, I took a little mental inventory of all the things he hasn’t worn, used, or liked.  Them kids are tricky!  What works for one, doesn’t work for our despot. What our despot loves, not so much for another.  So what do you do when your friends are pregnant and you need to buy them a gift they will actually use? (SPOILER ALERT!  If you are pregnant and a friend of mine, do not read any further. Or do, see what I care. This is what you’ll be getting.)

Just Plain Cute (no, that’s the name of the website, but yes, they are):

Aren’t they adorbs?  And you actually use them! Miracle of miracles!  My sister-in-law gave two of these monogrammed beauties to us for Colin’s shower.  I though at the time, “oh those are cute, but really, any regular burp cloth is fine”.  But I was wrong. And when I am wrong, I can admit it. Reluctantly. A few months later.

These are the softest little cloths, and always the first ones I go to in the drawer.  And I always take these along when we are traveling, just in case there are multiple babies and my burp cloth goes-a-missing.  This actually happens.  But since this one has a cute little ribbon along the top and bottom, I can spot it really quickly.  Plus, it’s monogrammed. I don’t know if it’s the narcissist in me, but I love to stamp my name on just about everything. It’s why I own a label maker. Now the despot gets to share the fun.

Creating your own kiddo library

If you’ve seen the photos of our nursery (being dismantled as I type….), then you saw we created a little reading library of sorts for Colin.  I like how it fills the space but also creates an artistic element to the wall as well. It appears this is becoming a popular trend- check our some of the awesome libraries over at Ohdeedoh.com (kid sister to Apartment Therapy, and a site I obsessed over while preggo).

Take a look, it's in a book......

Lamar Burton would be so proud, right?  Obviously, we love this idea. If you are interested, we looked all over for picture ledges to create the kind of reading rack look we were going for. I looked at Pottery Barn Kids at this, but wanted something I could wall mount and that would be more open:

Focusing my search on picture ledges, I looked at the regular Joe Pottery Barn for these in white:

Now you know I love me some PB, but I couldn’t stomach the price, especially since they didn’t come in the length I was hoping for. I would have needed to double my order. Balls!

But as you know, when I have an idea, I am like a dog with a bone. I wasn’t about to give up. I had a vision.  And lo and behold, I found them at where else? Ikea, and for cheap!  They were the perfect length and finish as well. And for a fraction of the price, even Kase was willing to travel to the happiest place on Earth (for me, anyway).  Check em out in action (I can’t locate them on the Ikea site, but trust me, they are there, and about $10 each):

Now mind you, that was taken B.C.: Before Colin. So things have gotten a lot busier on those shelves, but they are really great. I think in the new place, we will duplicate this in the Nurfice, but maybe go with one more shelf?  I think more is more in this case.

We’re gonna need a new TV….

The good news?  We sold our place!  Six days after putting it on the market, if you want to know.  Which is basically a miracle in this housing market. Cue “We are the Champions”….

The (not really) bad news?  We’re gonna need a new TV.  Yup, as part of our contract, the buyers get our TV, not to mention the bookshelves and media unit it is housed in. And our large poster of New York we scored from Ikea that people seem to always love. And the sleeper sofa in the sunroom.  And our curtains.  It would seem they like the look of our place. In fact, they were even interested in buying the 4′ giraffe in Colin’s room, but mama’s gotta draw the line somewhere.  Plus, it’s not mine to sell, and little guy can’t sign contracts yet.

We just had the home inspection on Friday and it went really well.  In fact, there was only item that the home inspector identified needed help. Our dishwasher door is slightly off and you need to jiggle it a bit when you close the door. Totally fixable.  Our realtor said it was the best home inspection she had ever heard of, and I have to agree. Especially after watching “My First Place’ on HGTV where all deals always seem to fall apart after bad home inspections. Sweet relief.

So for all intents and purposes, this deal is done until closing on March 1.  We really can’t wrap our heads around how easy this move has been so far. I guess it all works out the way it is supposed to, right?

Something I found interesting about this process was that for our buyers, it came down to two units: ours and an identical unit on the 3rd floor with a great view and a substantially lower price.  The other unit had no furnishings left as the owners had already moved out.  It makes me wonder if staging really is where it’s at.  I know I have sung the praises of staging, but truth be told, we had no choice: we live here.  Who knows, really. But I have to say, I am a firm believer now in staging a home. Of course, having your home on the market is still a crapshoot- you have to attract the exact right buyer for your home, and they have to show up, be having a good day, etc. Luckily, we had the right buyers show up and they liked our style.  There is no way to tell, really. I am just so happy it all worked out.  Now excuse me, I have to get ready for the movers- they come on Friday!

I’m gonna miss ya buddy

We just got back from dinner with friends. Everytime we have to say goodbye to yet another friend, I realize how lucky we have been to have met such amazing, kind, smart, funny people.  But you know who I am really gonna miss?

(Sniff).  I love our washing machine and dryer.  They hold so many dirty clothes.  As I type, I am washing all of our sofa slipcovers.  I won’t be able to do them altogether in Boston and I am afraid of uneven wear.  So I am getting them done now.  Tomorrow, I will tackle the remainder of our dirty clothes, and maybe even steam wash some of Colin’s little stuffed buddies.  And Thursday night, I may just do one last load to remember the good times we’ve had over the past two months.  I’m gonna miss ya buddy.

And we shall call it…..the Nurfice

Nurfice: (n) Contraction of the words Nursery and Office or Den.  Synonyms: Offisery, Nurden. Trademark: me.

We are facing a little dilemma here at Casa de Despot. Since we are losing a room we find to be essential with our move to Boston, we need to get smart with our space.  We are considering a Nurfice. Yes,you guessed right! That is a made up word to describe the combination of spaces formerly known as the nursery, and the office.

We need a space to act as an office, den, playroom and nursery. Oh and did I mention it is the through-way to the terrace?

Here are the things we need to co-exist in the new space: our desk for one. We own the Bedford desk from Pottery Barn. If you are considering this desk for your own home office, I highly recommend. Lots of storage for files and office items, and it is modular, so you can build on to it.  Plus, it’s pretty classic and not too industrial, so we are hoping it will incorporate well with other furniture.

Now, let’s move onto the den/playroom aspect and add a little storage. The next item we need to add to the room will be our favorite shelving unit from Ikea- the Billy bookcases.

You know we loved these in our living room, but we are thinking that for the nurfice, we will go for the short stack, as I like to call it- keep it at the three shelf level and add the doors to hide the things we need to store.  On top of the shelves, we can place a tv- this space will be able to function as a den of sorts, so we need ample storage and space to host both entertainment items for adults, like games and xboxes, and entertainment for little despots, like books, toys, and stuffed animals (or friends as the despot refers to them).

So we have places to work and play. But what about the despot? Where oh where to put the despot for his dreamy time?  Luckily, his crib is nice and slim and on wheels, so wherever we need it to be, it can go.  It is not a fixed piece of furniture like the shelves or desk, so we can work it into the space. Hopefully, it won’t look too odd, but we have to work with what we’ve got, right?

Lastly, we would like to use the room as a walk through to the terrace, since our bedroom will be a bit tight for guests to meander through. So we got to thinking, when we are using the space as an office or playroom and need a little more room, we can wheel the crib into the closet, right? Could we take it even further? I mean, I like this “baby in the closet” in theory, but not for my little despot. He wouldn’t have it.

No one puts baby in the closet. Or do they?

Ah, decisions, decisions.  Got any advice or guidance?

Pant(r)y Raid: Update- Week 1

From this......

to this. Are you up for the challenge?

I thought I would give anyone who really cares (don’t all raise your hands at once now!) an update on how our little pantry project is progressing along.  As it turns out, we were right: there will be no luxurious pantry space for us in the new Boston apartment, so time is of the essence!  As I mentioned in our last post, we have been busy busy busy eating ourselves out of house and home.

Not only am I working with what I’ve got, which cuts down on the grocery bill, but I’m getting pretty creative, and not in a “cheez it and pea casserole” kind of way.  Here are a few of the recent meals we’ve cooked up using pantry, fridge and freezer items:

1. Angel hair pasta with Bertoli vineyard inspirations sauce, sauteed onions and purdue short cuts roast chicken (a mama must have, you will recall) with a balsamic glaze

2. Chicken quesadillas with black bean dip, onion, red and green peppers.

3. Roasted chicken with Stove Top stuffing and candied yams (this was our favorite- like Boston Market but better!)

4. Turkey and cranberry sandwiches on mini croissant

Sure, I’m not going to win Top Chef anytime soon, but hey, I’m giving it the ol’ college try.  Have you ever tried to use only what you had on hand to create a meal? How did it go?  Do tell!

Before and After [Bingeing and Purging]

I told you not to call Hoarders! I told you I didn’t have a problem.  I can stop whenever I want.  Er, need to.  And that need has arisen.  We move in one week!

Take a look-see at our storage unit.  Who’s gonna call Hoarders now, huh?  You talk a big game.

Storage Unit Before

Storage Unit After

Yup, folks. That is actually progress. I know, it’s hard to tell, but we binged for quite a few years and purged all day yesterday. I have never felt so clean.  And Goodwill has never felt so lucky. We’ve got some karma credit with family members as well. Not too shabby.

Wanna see our pantry?  As you may recall, I promised that Kase and I would do our best to eat ourselves out of house and home before we move due to lack of pantry space in our galley kitchen in Beantown.  And we are doing an okay job, in my humble opinion.  And we aren’t eating Cheez-It and pea casserole every night, either.  I’ve gotten creative, but not that creative.  But don’t hold me to it.

Pantry Before

Pantry After

So, see? I can totally stop COLD TURKEY should I need to. I don’t have a problem!  So what if I have the shakes and stroll the canned food aisles at the grocery store?  I totally have this under control.

Paper Mates

I have a friend named Erin.  When we met, we became the kind of instant friends you don’t want to be around. We are that annoying.  Just ask our hubbies. We got together for lunch today, and did a little shopping afterwards.

Erin and her husband moved this year to one of those gorgeous homes you think you will eventually buy when you grow up.  Except that we are grown ups now, and she owns the house and we are going to be renters again.  Think I’m jealous? Of course I am- I’m no saint.  But I love Erin because she loves my style.  And I love hers. So shopping at my favorite store downtown can be somewhat dangerous.

Le Village Marche is my hands-down favorite store in Shirlington, VA.  It is going to be one of those places I will really miss. I hope I can find a suitable replacement with as much personality.  Everytime I go in there, my debit card takes a hit, and I feel like I’ve taken a hit of the good stuff- it makes me that happy.

So of course I had to take my bestie to check out their wares. And I was not disappointed in her reaction. We parked the little guys in their stroller and insanity commenced.

A project I really want to take on is taking these great pieces of wrapping paper and framing them for a children’s room.  Luckily, Erin has a playroom in her basement- a perfect location for them.  Just take these (at $4 a pop):

Nice, right?

Bonjour, Amour!

And add a dash of this:

That’s gonna be some fine looking art for their basement.  Love it. I hinted at a little project before on this blog that needs to wait until our move, but in the meantime, have you ever done an art project like this? Do tell!

Before and After [with books]

I was just viewing a house tour on Apartment Therapy that really appealed to my aesthetic. To be fair, it would appeal to anyone’s aesthetic since it is a totally gorgeous and smart design.  The owner of a small narrow condo (sound familiar?) used built in bookshelves to take advantage of his space- the end result being cozy as well as spacious all at the same time.  It’s stunning.  See what I’m talking about?

Before

After

Are you dying? I myself am dead. It is so perfect in every way to me.  Allow me to indulge myself a bit, would you?:

Please tell me.....

...you can see a similarity? (please?)

It’s like its red-headed step-sister from Wal-Mart, right? Okay, that’s over with. Thanks guys. Moving right along…..

A good friend of mine just moved from a gorgeous rowhome to an apartment in Old City Philly.  They chose the same route as the architect above- build up, up, up!  They are true readers, so it perfectly works as form and function.  Take a look see:

Before

After

I mean, the space is great to begin with, but I love how they made it extra cozy and it really reflects their personalities, which is the most important design rule.  Love it.

Mama Must Haves- Food Edition

Of course I was going to do a food edition.  For someone who eats as much as I do, it would really be silly not to.

1. Cranberry cinnamon goat cheese

All Aboard for Yummy Town!

Gross, right? WRONG!  You are so wrong.  This stuff is a little trip to Yummy Town.  I like to put it on Carr’s Whole Wheat crackers, and the combination of salty, sweet along with the creamy and crunchy really work.  Try it. You won’t regret it.

2. Saltine Goldfish

When you are a new mom, you don’t get to eat…… period. Forget breakfast, lunch or dinner.  It’s snack time, all the time over here.  You know how you are supposed to feed goldfish a very specific amount or they will eat themselves to death?  That is kind of how I am, but with goldfish crackers, which is a bit weird, really.  They are super delicious.  Go out and buy a bag. I dare you not to eat yourself to death.

3. Perdue Short Cuts honey roasted chicken

Tastes like chicken!

Okay, confession time.  This is now a staple in pretty much every meal. I love this product.  Little pieces of chicken I can sprinkle onto a sandwich, into a quesadilla, or on top of pasta.  There is no limit to my creativity!!!  Though to be honest, sometimes I just eat the pieces straight outta the bag.  Don’t judge me.

4. Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper

AKA, Liquid Crack Cocaine

This is now limited to being just a special treat. Over the Christmas holiday, I was introduced to this at my parent’s house, which is totally random in its own right.  I drank it every day. Then I got home, went to the Target and purchased some for myself.  My bedtime started to creep later and later and I couldn’t figure out why.  That’s when I realized I was drinking this stuff which is chock full of caffeine and other chemicals that are delicious. And as addictive as crack. So now, I limit my intake to special occasions.

Anyway, add these onto your list for your daily Target trip. What, you don’t do a daily trip to Target?  And you call yourself an American?!

It’s the tiniest bedroom in the woooorrrlld!

Cue the circus sideshow music. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you:

Shangri-La, no?

Yup, that sucker is a scant 12′x9′.  Luckily, we aren’t coming from a very large master bedroom in the first place- ours is only 13′x11′, so not a ton of difference, but let me tell you, it’s just enough to make me want to pull my hair out.   So like I said earlier, this will fit our King bed and two side tables.  Not too bad.  But, and there is always a but, this leaves the issue of clothing storage.

Currently, we don’t have a dresser. I didn’t like the way it was closing in our room, so we removed it and put our clothes into our walk in closet, which is nicely equipped with some built ins with drawers.  We also have about 800 shelves perfect for sweaters, jeans, etc.  Unfortunately, this little luxury does not exist in our new Boston closet.  We basically get a clothes rack and two tiny shelving units.  What to do?

We are considering using the Malm 3 door dresser as our new side tables.  You likey? I do.

The Malm is a classic piece. Sure, it’s from Ikea, but I don’t judge. It is plain and simple.  I’m a fan.  And it has a good amount of additional storage so we can easily keep all of our clothes. Sweet. And with one on either side of our bed, I think it will look minimalist and clean, no? See, here is our bed:

Hey Malm, wanna get together sometime?

Yeah, that’s a done deal. Good thing our new Ikea is only 30 minutes away from Boston.

PS- Ya see the terrace?  Oh, that puppy is gonna be so suh-weeeeet in the spring!
